Il Divino – Michelangelo’s Sistine Ceiling in VR

Share:

A Virtual Reality experience powered by Unreal Engine where you can walk through and learn about the Sistine Chapel Ceiling: Il Divino: Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Ceiling.

The experience was originally created exclusively for the SIGGRAPH 2019 Immersive Pavilion, by the team behind the previous SIGGRAPH 2017 VR piece: Il Gigante: Michelangelo’s David in VR. Despite the high quality of the experience, Il Divino was a private project of the developers. The Vatican was not involved in the making.

Watch the Trailer

Step onto Michelangelo’s own scaffold and learn about how he painted the ceiling, or enter a Vatican conservator’s mobile aerial platform to see the ceiling up close, and learn about the controversial cleaning. Starting in the entryway, you are free to move around the floor. Even the floor itself is impressive due to its special marble patterns. Looking up high, you can see the famous paintings looking back down at you.

With well-voiced narration from start to finish, over one hundred clickable elements and highly professionally done visuals, this is an extensive tour. Il Divino is free to download on Steam right now. There is also a non-VR mode available for 2D screens with keyboard and mouse support, making this a great hybrid mode experience.

Opinion

"This experience looks amazing and is well worth the download. Probably even better than a real visit, as you'll have the whole place to yourself instead of having to fight your way through a horde of tourists."
